International Portuguese Music Awards nominees announced

FALL RIVER — The first annual International Portuguese Music Awards are poised to be a great hit and put the Southcoast on the world’s stage.
“It surpassed all of our expectations by 300 to 400 percent, in terms of number, origin and quality of entries,” said Floriano Cabral, the brainchild of the contest. “We received 176 entries from 16 different countries.”
Nominations for the awards were announced Monday. Artists from as far as Romania and Malta were selected by an international panel of judges and will be competing in nine categories, ranging from dance and hip/hop to Música Popular and classical music.
The winners will be announced Feb. 2 at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford. The event will feature Portuguese-Brazilian Pop sensation Roberto Leal, who has garnered 30 gold records, and other prominent international Portuguese entertainers, including Sarah Pacheco, Nick Pedro, Jorge Ferreira, Eratoxica and Nathalie Pires.
The performances will be broadcast worldwide by RTP International (RTPi) and several other TV and radio stations.
“The event is sold out,” Cabral said.
Two finalists will be competing for the “New Talent” award: composer/singer John Jorge of Connecticut and singer/songwriter Josh Pereira of Fall River.
